Launching onto the scene with singles ‘We Cry’ and ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ back in 2008, it is hard to believe that The Script were returning to Birmingham on their 4th headline tour – where has the time gone?
Following a very energetic supporting set from London-based rapper Tinie Tempah (a last-minute stand in for original support act Labrinth), the band appeared on stage preceded by dancers holding green flags as Danny O’Donoghue launched into album track ‘Paint The Town Green’ from their latest release No Sound Without Silence, setting the tone for the rest of evening.
With a four-album strong back catalogue, the Irish band’s setlist was abound with old fan favourites, from the likes of ‘Before the Worst’ and ‘Breakeven’, with new tracks and number one single ‘Superheroes’ eliciting a seriously loud and raucous sing-along from the crowd at the Genting Arena. Being in the stalls, it is always a joy to see how the packed-out standing crowd react to something, and they were lapping up every single note.
A fan favourite featured yet again; Science and Faith release ‘Nothing’. The band explained they were to do something they hadn’t done on tour for a while, and requested everyone in the standing crowd to ring an ex for lead singer O’Donoghue to sing the song to whilst on stage. This is somewhat of a tradition at Script concerts since the single was released, and I alongside many was happy to see it’s return to the setlist.
A move to the B-stage also caused a shift in tone, the three-piece launching into songs ‘Never Seen Anything (Quite Like You)’ and ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’, the man behind me in particular enjoying every word (and singing along to them far too loudly). O’Donoghue then walked through the opposing stalls with a camera to perform (my personal favourite) ‘You Won’t Feel A Thing’ before heading back to the stage.
Ending their set with a four-song long encore, and ending with fan favourites and best-selling singles ‘For The First Time’ and ‘Hall of Fame’, I left the arena with my heart pounding, my ears ringing and knew that this wouldn’t be my last time seeing The Script… on to the next tour, please boys.
